Abstract |
The karyotype of Runcina coronata is described in specimens collected at Roscoff (Brittany, France). The set is composed by 17 pairs of homologous chromosomes, slightly decreasing in length, and all of them are isobrachial (16 meta- and 1 submetacentric). This is the first karyological report concerning the suborder Runcinacea, and it confirms the substantial homogeneity of the order Cephalaspidea at this regard. A karyotype such as the one described for R. coronata is suggested to be close to the plesiomorphic condition of the Opisthobranchia as a whole. The karyological evolution within the Cephalaspidea, resulting both in rising and diminution of chromosome number from a basic set with n = 17, is also discussed. |
