Abstract
In this paper the changes in growth of the autumn-spawning herring (Clupea harengus) stock in the northwestern North Sea during the postwar period are discussed. The data suggest that in the northwestern North Sea, as with the North Sea autumn-spawning herring in general, there was a substantial increase in the late 1940's and early 1950's in the mean length at age of all components of the population fished by the Scottish herring fishery. Although some problems of interpreting conflicting data are posed and further investigation is required, it is considered likely that the low-maturity fish found in the northwestern North Sea during the summer belong to the Scottish west coast (division VIa) stock.
