Oblique subduction is considered as the cause of significant effects on related active margins: strike-slip faulting parallel to the margin translation of microblocs and deformation of the fore-arc basin. Sumatra is a clear example of a shear component induced by oblique convergence and expressed by two major strike-slip fault zones: the Sumatra and Mentawai faults. New data collected during a French Indonesian joint cruise in 1992 along the northern part of the Sumatra margin show that the Mentawai fault zone continues northward but also that the fore-arc basin is segmented. This confirm that the fore-arc sliver plate along Sumatra is not rigid. The EW extension of the fore-arc domain may represent an incipient stage for a westward migration of the accretionary prism over the oceanic subducting plate and the formation of a sedimentary arc of Andaman type.
