Abstract
Scallops of the species Chlamys varia were conditioned towards flashlights. The attack of a predator, starfish Asterias rubens was linked to a previous flashlight. Although C. varia did not show the expected escape reaction as a result of conditioning, the individuals of the test group reacted towards the optic stimulus by closing their shell significantly more often than the control. This can be interpreted as a sign for learning abilities and memory in C. varia.
