Abstract
An unfamiliar diatom was observed in the local townettings taken by research vessels of the Plymouth Laboratory towards the end of January 1977. It was a large member of the genus Coscinodiscus, but a species not previously known in the English Channel. The mucilage produced by this diatom was so abundant as to restrict trawling in some areas off Plymouth.
