Abstract
Coastal areas are a highly demanded resource for economic activities such as fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, port services and other activities which require sustainable development and management. In Chile, the management and territorial use of the coastal areas has been promoted by the creation of the National Commission of Coastal Zone Use with the participation of several governmental institutions. The principal
objectives of this Commission are to ensure the sustainable use of the national coastal zone and support a zoning process. Economic activities carried out along the coastal zone of Chile are regulated by several laws and ministries, under the overall coordination of the Commission. On the other hand, activities such as benthic fisheries (including bivalve molluscs) and aquaculture have clear competitive interactions with other coastal users,
which must be considered in any zoning process. This paper describes some elements that affect coastal zone use, with particular reference to benthic fisheries and aquaculture, their intra and inter specific relationship and their effect on natural benthic organisms (including bivalves) in southern Chile. Finally the author encourages the promotion of a joint management process through feedback between parties engaged in bivalve aquaculture and the management of natural resources.
