| Abstract |
Since 1982, bonamiasis has been confirmed in seven coastal areas in southern and eastern England where Ostrea edulis cultivation is undertaken. The pattern of this spread in England correlates with movements of oysters for cultivation and though in some instances this has resulted in wild stocks becoming affected, any natural spread has been very localised.
The main control strategy in England has been to monitor O. edulis stocks for the disease and to restrict transfer of infected stocks for relaying in order to prevent further spread. This, together with advice on husbandry methods, has meant O. edulis cultivation has continued to be possible, though its success in the main relies on supplies of B. ostreae-free juveniles for relaying. |
