Abstract
The diatoms Coscinodiscus wailesii and Thalassiosira punctigera, regarded as immigrants from 1977-78 in the English Channel, were observed for the first time in the Oslofjord and the Skagerrak in the autumn 1979. Examination of monthly samples from the Skagerrak collected after that, showed the presence of the two species every year between October and March, “Arctic” species, also present in the Baltic, were observed in the Oslofjord and the Skagerrak in March-April 1985 and 1986. Whereas the “Arctic” species supposedly are favoured by the presence of ice and have been in the Oslofjord and the Skagerrak since these areas were formed, it may still be questioned whether C. wailesii and T. punctigera are established immigrants or introduced by southerly currents every autumn.
