| Abstract |
Most of the ponds of the Provinciaal Groendomein Prinsenpark in Retie (Province of Antwerp, Northern Belgium) receive water from the river Meuse through the Canal Bocholt-Herentals. Both the Meuse and its connecting canals are known as reservoirs of alien macro-invertebrates. Until now 9 alien species have been found in ditches and ponds in the eastern part of the study area: Girardia tigrina, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Dreissena polymorpha, Corbicula fluminea, Dikerogammarus villosus, Echinogammarus berilloni, Chelicorophium curvispinum, Atyaëphyra desmarest and Orconectes limosus. C. fluminea, D. villosus and C. curvispinum are recent invaders (after 1990). The discovery of D. Villosus confirms its rapid spread to the northern part of Belgium. Only P. antipodarum and O. limosus are well established in both ditches and ponds. The other species still remain low in numbers or are restricted to particular habitats, mainly in the ditches. |
