Abstract
    Formalin and two formaldehyde-depot chemicals, Dowicil 75 super(TM) and Kohrsolin super(TM), caused changes in dry weight (DW) and ash free dry weight (AFDW) in the bivalves Arctica islandica and Macoma baltica . These changes in weight stabilisized after about 100 days of incubation, with the exception of Dowicil 75. Formalin did not change DW significantly, but decreased AFDW by more than 20% in both species. Dowicil was found to increase DW by more than 10%, the increase in AFDW amounted to about 50% after 194 days of incubation. Kohrsolin did not affect DW significantly, but decreased AFDW by 14.5% in Arctica islandica and 17.5% in Macoma baltica. Showing nearly the same effects on DW and AFDW as formalin does, Kohrsolin is suggested to be alternative for preservation of macrobenthic animals as it does not release formaldehyde gas.
