In the light of societal important issues and the capability of scientific drilling for a quantum leap in the scientific understanding, the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) is an essential component of responsible management strategies for the resources and environment of the dynamic Earth.

The Motto of ICDP:
"Through the unique capacities of scientific drilling to provide exact, fundamental and globally significant knowledge of the composition, structure and processes of the Earth's crust”.

The general requirements for the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program ( were agreed upon the 1993 Potsdam Conference. ICDP is a peer-reviewed proposal-driven program, which operates on the basis that the scientific findings of the program should have broad impact on on-going research throughout the world. It is a continuing program with an operational framework fostering international collaboration and evolving technical capability.

The principal advantages of such an international program of appropriate scale and viability are:

  • Focusing of scientific effort on drilling sites of global significance (World Geological Sites),
  • Affordability and cost-effectiveness through sharing,
  • Attraction of high quality researchers to topics of high national and international priority,
  • Intellectual benefits to all participants arising from international cooperation.
