2012, April 15: ECORD Grant

The European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) is sponsoring merit-based awards for outstanding graduate students to conduct research related to the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. The research may be directed toward the objectives of upcoming or past DSDP/ODP/IODP expeditions (core material and/or data). ECORD Grants cover travel and lab expenses or other approved costs related to the study. Grants will not typically exceed 2000 € and will be paid at the start of the project. Applicants can be enrolled in either a PhD or post-doc program at any institution from ECORD countries only.

Applications should take the form of a mini-proposal detailing the aims of the study, the material/data to be worked on, the project partnership and the costs. A final report, including balanced budget and some details on the data, must be completed within 15 months after the grant award.

The deadline for application to get an ECORD Research Grant is April 15, 2012. Please send your application, including a detailed mini-proposal (max. 5 pages) with a detailed budget plan, as well as a CV (template to download on our website, please only use this template) and a Letter of Support of one supervisor (template to download available on our website) to ESSAC Office (iact_essac.office@iact.ugr-csic.es)

The review of the applications will be made by ESSAC, and the decisions will be communicated by mid of June 2012.

2012, Mar. 11-14: The DS3F Conference, Sitges

The Deep-Sea & Sub-Seafloor Frontiers Conference, March 11-14, 2012, Sitges (Barcelona) Spain

The Deep-Sea and Sub-Seafloor Frontiers project (DS3F) is a EU-funded Coordination Action, which is developing sub-seafloor sampling and observing strategies for enhanced understanding of deep-sea and sub-seafloor processes by connecting marine research in life and geosciences, climate and environmental change with socio-economic issues and policy building. A long-term research approach will be established covering: (i) sustainable ocean management, particularly in the deep sea, in view of its enhanced exploitation (fisheries, hydrocarbon exploration and other seafloor and sub-seafloor uses), (ii) the necessity to unravel the deep-seated geological processes that drive seafloor ecosystems, and (iii) release of the potential of seabed archives for paleo-environmental reconstructions and improved prediction of future climate change.

After a series of successful ad hocworkshops at the Work Package level, the Conference in Sitges aims at opening the discussion by gathering key players and top level researchers in the fields of deep-sea research to (i) bring in new scientific, strategic and policy insights, (ii) to disseminate the achievements of DS3F to date, and (iii) to condense the intellectual outcome of the individual workshops towards an EU white paper in the field. We hence encourage participation from European as well as non-European researchers to contribute to this important task; young researchers, who will hopefully directly benefit from the DS3F roadmap document to be submitted to the European Commission by mid-2012, are particularly encouraged since financial support could be provided.

2012, April 2-5: SINTRIK'12, Kenitra

The Kenitra International Show of New Technologies and Research in Computer Science, April 3-5, 2012, Kenitra, Morocco

SINTRIK is a great event and a unique meeting opportunity among stakeholders and Research Laboratories for a common reflection on the challenges and modalities of mutual exploitation of the latest technological advances in computing, telecommunications and other areas of research in new technologies. It is also an open space for entrepreneurs and researchers to enhance, showcase, and reflect on the best conditions required to put the innovative ideas of scientific research in the service of revitalization and economic dynamics. In the mean time, to make the great economic resources available to research laboratories, thus enable scientific development. So, above all, SINTRIK is a space for exchanging ideas for a possible successful partnership at the national and international levels.
SINTRIK considers its main objective the creation of synergy among companies (national and international) and the Universities in the field of research. Such a purpose is therefore to establish and promote interaction and cooperation within the scientific and technological innovation-driven Laboratory and the business world through companies wishing to improve their potential economic performance benefiting youth skills and innovative ideas that research in new technologies can bring to them. It is also suitable time to make the transfer of know-how that can establish or reconcile research with the practical economic affairs which is the first storefront. It is now an action strategy and direction for the future in the atmosphere of the globalization in which off-shoring and technology tools are the real strengths of economic performance and efficiency.
SINTRIK is part of the policy and general guidelines of the Moroccan state, which is committed to make technological research and its practical applications the fundamental pillar of the reform of education and an essential tool to give life to national economic growth. The same policy certainly requires funding and support for a portion of the bill allocated to research from the business world, in a spirit of solidarity. This is a realization of the innovative spirit of the National Charter of Education and Training and Plan of emergency, both of which make the complementarities between the University and its socio-economic environment one of their major objectives.

2013, April 15-17: Exploring the Cretaceous Greenhouse through Scientific Drilling, London

Exploring the Cretaceous Greenhouse through Scientific Drilling

April 15-17, 2013 - London, United Kingdom
Convener/s: Stuart Robinson, Timothy Bralower

Overview

The International Ocean Discovery Program’s science plan identifies understanding the response of Earth’s climate system to elevated levels of atmospheric CO2 as one of the key themes for the next phase of scientific ocean drilling. The most recent super-greenhouse interval, from 125-80 Ma in the Cretaceous, provides a unique opportunity to address this theme. This workshop is being convened with the specific goal of instigating new oceanic and continental drilling legs designed to further our understanding of Cretaceous oceans, how circulation was driven, the factors that led to ocean acidification and different degrees of deoxygenation, and the impact of these conditions on life at the surface of the ocean and at depth.

Participation

Full and partial travel support is available for a limited number of scientists. Early-career researchers and graduate students are encouraged to apply. To apply, please send a short statement of interest and CV by November 1, 2012. U.S. applicants should contact Tim Bralower. International applicants from IODP and ICDP member countries should contact Stuart Robinson.

Deadline to apply: November 01, 2012

Recent and Ancient Carbonate Mounds in Morocco

Rabat, Morocco, 24-30 October 2011

Objectives of the workshop (Rabat, October 24-25)

Some 10 years after the first reporting of Recent carbonate mounds off Morocco, the 2011 Cocarde workshop in Rabat offers an opportunity to assess achievements of past oceanographic cruises and to exchange views about prospective actions in the future.
In coherence with Cocarde’s capacity building and its vision on a holistic approach of carbonate mounds through geological time as a key to fundamental and applied insights and breakthroughs, the workshop is introduced by a full-day, open-access tutorial event, conceived as a voyage through time, space and Geosphere-Biosphere coupling processes in Recent and Ancient carbonate factories in Morocco.
The second day will be available for targeted strategic meetings, to discuss possibly innovative approaches in carbonate mound research in Morocco on Recent and Ancient mounds - offshore and onshore - and to review opportunities of international collaboration.

Objectives of the field seminar (High Atlas and Tafilalt, October 26-30)

A task group of Moroccan and European scientists, with a mix of senior scientists and PhD and postdoctoral researchers, will visit a number of field outcrops of carbonate mounds and carbonate factories from Ordovician to Jurassic ages in the Central High Atlas and eastern Anti-Atlas. An objective is the assessment of the documentation – in a collaborative effort – of a potential “Moroccan mound reference route” for capacity building and international outreach purposes.

The programme of the workshop can be downloaded here.

The final report of the workshop is available here.

A slide presentation (by Bodil Lauridsen) about the workshop and field seminar is available here.
