Abstract
The key scientific result of the project is the generation of detailed maps of a set of Sites of Community Importance (SCIs- EU Habitats Directive) in the Azores, with the objective of deriving guidelines for their management. The project will determine habitat attributes that significantly affect the distribution and dynamics of harvested species. Special attention will be given to determining valuable zones for fish reproduction (for example, groupers and trigger fish), and monitoring fish community structure and abundance. The project is highly multidisciplinary, displays a clear symbiosis between marine science and technology, and implements the key components in the chain that gives support to modern systems for marine habitat mapping: data acquisition, pre-processing, and transmission, multi-scale data integration, and information processing and dissemination.
