Abstract
    The authors have proposed a decision-support system for improved ship handling simulator-based training of the ship officers in charge of ship-to-ship (STS) operations. The basic concept is visualization of the danger of collision (steel-tosteel contact) from the viewpoint of manoeuvring ship based on hydrodynamic interaction in its final approach phase towards the constant heading ship. The danger of collision is evaluated based on hydrodynamic interaction acting on the ship hull and simulation of ship manoeuvring. The hydrodynamic interaction is estimated from the results of model test experiments with two tankers in various positions in the final approach phase of an STS lightering operation. The present approach succeeded to visualize the potential danger surrounding the ship-to-be-lightered, which can be considered to supply safety information of interaction effects to inexperienced mooring masters.
