| Abstract |
Stygobiont snails were collected at five springs in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The low-spired, valvatoid Horatia klecakiana were found in three, but in the other two springs, the snails had turreted, high-spired shells. Despite their markedly different shells, the female reproductive organs and penises in the turreted snails resembled those in H. klecakiana. Phylogeny based on mtCOI and nuclear histone sequences grouped the turreted snails as the sister taxon of Horatia. The turreted snails are described as a new genus, with two new species. We speculate that turriform snails may penetrate into deeper subterranean waters than Horatia, which is associated with springs. |
