Abstract
A new species of Rhopalodia is described from fossil sediments from Mexico based on light and scanning electron microscope observations. The new Rhopalodia species has valve features that place it within the R. gibba group of the genus, including a raphe in a short keel on the dorsal side of the valve and girdle bands that have small extensions that clasp over the costate fibulae. The species is distinguished from R. gibba and other allied species by valve shape. This is the first extinct fossil species of Rhopalodia described outside of Europe.
