Abstract
Whitemouth croaker spawns in the inner part of the Rio de la Plata estuary in conjunction with a bottom salinity front. Reproductive activity of this species occurs mostly at dusk. Spawning incidence was about 11% during November 1995 and 7% during February 1996. The relative fecundity ranged from 100 to 300 hydrated oocytes per gram of female (ovary free). Batch fecundity ranged from 38,000 (31cm TL) to 850,000 (65 cm TL) hydrated oocytes. Fecundity values were lower during February, coinciding with an increase in the rates of atresia.
