Abstract
    One of the orders of the crustacean subphylum is amphipods, which have high nutritional value and a suitable size for larvae and seed of fish and shrimp. One of the genera of Crustaceans, Amphipods, endemic to Suppa District, Pinrang Regency, is Phronima sp., also known as Grandidierella megnae, with the synonym Microdeutopus gryllotapla. Due to the ambiguity of the genus or species and the characteristics of its habitat, a study was conducted to identify and characterize the habitat of Crustaceans, specifically Amphipods, and to determine sustainable management alternatives in brackish water pond aquaculture. Samples of Crustaceans: Amphipods, water quality, and plankton were collected weekly from ponds in Suppa District over 10 weeks, from April to June 2025. Crustaceans: Amphipods samples were identified to the species level using morphology and DNA barcoding methods, and their population was also determined. The water quality measured was the in-situ and ex-situ water quality variables. Phytoplankton were identified to the genus level, and their density, dominance index, diversity index, and evenness index were determined. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the effect of water quality and plankton on the population of Crustaceans: Amphipods. The identification results determined that the crustaceans, specifically amphipods from the brackish water ponds aquaculture of Suppa District, were identified as Australomicrodeutopus haswelli, with the synonym Microdeutopus haswelli. The density of A. haswelli ranges from 1 to 9 ind./10 L. Although information on water quality requirements for A. haswelli is very limited, in general the water quality (except water salinity) of Crustaceans: Amphipods habitat ponds can support its survival and growth. Of the 15 variables tested, only 8 of them, namely salinity, pH, total dissolved solids, nitrite, alkalinity, phytoplankton density, phytoplankton dominance index, and phytoplankton diversity index, which together significantly (P = 0.001) affected the population of A. haswelli in the ponds of Suppa District. Adjusting variables such as salinity, pH, total dissolved solids, nitrite, alkalinity, phytoplankton density, phytoplankton dominance index, and phytoplankton diversity index will create an ideal environment for A. haswelli, which will positively impact environmental health and overall pond productivity.
