Abstract
Porcellio obsoletus Budde-Lund, 1885 is reported for the first time from the Iberian Peninsula, including both mainland Portugal and Spain. Previously, the species was known mostly from the eastern Mediterranean. To aid in its identification, a new description is provided, expanding on those published by other authors for this species and taxa currently considered as its synonyms. The results of this study also suggest that P. obsoletus libanicus Vandel (1955) is likely a distinct species, whereas P. obsoletus mavromoustakisi Strouhal (1968) does not exhibit significant differences from the species originally described by Budde-Lund in 1885. The fragmented distribution of P. obsoletus may be a consequence of the Messinian salinity crisis, which could have fragmented its original range throughout the Mediterranean region, or of human-mediated introduction.
