Abstract
In this thesis, a mathematical model originally proposed by Suweis et al. (2019) is applied to analyze how the resilience of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the North Sea is influenced by the increasing globalization of the trade system. The model describes the evolution of national fish biomass as a function of ecological parameters (carrying capacity, growth rate) and anthropogenic variables (domestic consumption, trade network). The work is structured in two parts: the first involves reconstructing local dynamics through data collection and analysis; the second consists of applying and testing the aggregated model. The results reveal a loss of resilience and a risk of collapse for the considered species, as well as a correlation with the increasing connectivity of the fish trade network. The limitations of the study - mainly due to considering only a fraction of the global market - highlight the extent of interdependence among countries in different parts of the world and suggest the potential of the model in a broader context.
