Abstract
This communication to accompany the proposal for a European Parliament and Council recommendation concerning the implementation of integrated coastal zone management in Europe announces a strategy for Europe on integrated coastal zone management. The strategy is based on the results of the Commission's demonstration programme on the integrated management of coastal zones in Europe, the primary objective of which was to identify the measures needed for appropriate planning and management of coastal zones in the Union and to draw conclusions on the future action needed at European level to strike a balance between environmental, economic and social considerations in coastal zones. This communication highlights the complementary roles played by different sectors and levels of the administration and recognises the diversity of conditions in the different coastal zones in the Union. The strategy announced consists of 38 measures to be taken at Union level to make the most efficient use of Community policies, adding only a limited number of new measures.
