Abstract
Based upon the review of the actual situation indicating the legislative and regulatory needs with respect to the approximation of European laws and regulations and standards on the one hand and upon the assessment of the actual situation, priorities and needs in all major ports in Latvia on the other hand, a legislation and regulatory framework to protect the marine environment will be worked out in accordance with Latvian authorities. This study was ordered by the Flemish Region and the main contractor is ECOLAS (Environmental Consultancy and Assistance). The Maritime Institute acts as a subcontractor for ECOLAS.
