The biodiversity of prokaryotes from polar seas and isolated from microbial mats in Antarctic lakes will be investigated by identification using fatty acid analysis and 16S rDNA sequencing, supplemented with diverse other taxonomic techniques. The strains will be cryopreserved and stored in a collection.
