Abstract
Coral sands and short crop macrophytes from reef lagoons off Réunion Island and Rodrigues (Indian Ocean) possess a high diversity of small-sized diatoms pertaining to the Achnanthales, with some taxa similar to Achnanthidium sensu lato (Round et al.1990). In this study, five taxa, bearing close resemblance to established taxa but with distinctive features are described and illustrated using scanning electron microscopy. The five new taxa are named Achnanthidium pseudodelicatissimum, A. flexuistriatum, A. glyphos, A. pseudochamaepinnularia and A. scalariforme. The nomenclatural position of each taxon is discussed.
