Abstract
Histological changes of gonads and serum profiles of sex steroids and vitellogenin (VTG) during the first and second reproductive cycles in the Pacific herring were examined. The results suggest that vitellogenesis is controlled by estradiol-17 beta (E2), spermatogenesis is promoted by 11-ketotestosterone (KT), and oocyte maturation and milt production is induced by 17 alpha ,20 beta -dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP).
