The newly appointed EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis visited – at the invitation and in the presence of Minister Crevits, Governor Decaluwé and a delegation of European, federal, regional and local dignitaries – the research facilities of the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) and the Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research (ILVO) in Ostend on 20 January. In the early morning, the delegation was also a guest at the Ostend fish auction and the incubator for aquaculture start-ups Marifish.Inc. This was followed later that day by a visit to the Redercentrale, the Zeebrugge fish auction and a newly built fishing vessel.

This visit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views on opportunities and challenges with all Flemish stakeholders in the marine research and fisheries/aquaculture sector. In addition, ways on how to cooperate were explored.
