Abstract
As described in our previous paper (Sorgeloos et al. , 1977) hypochlorite can be used as reactive agent to dissolve the lipoproteic chorion of Artemia cysts. Two commercial products are available worldwide, i.e. bleaching powder, chloride of lime Ca(OCL)2 and bleaching water NaOCl solutions. In Western Europe the latter product is the cheapest, whereas in the USA and Southeast Asia bleaching powder should be considered. Because the decapsulation process is a much more critical operation with bleaching powder, especially with regard to the viability of the embryos (Bruggeman et al., in preparation; Manzi, personal communication), we studied the use of technical NaOCl solutions in detail.
