Abstract
    Dialysis growth units were designed and operated to determine the effect of various parameters on algal growth in dialysis cultures. In each design the nutrient compartment containing the wastewater is separated from the algal culture compartment by the semipermeable dialysis membrane. Adequate mixing to prevent the "unmixed boundary layer" effect is provided to each compartment. The following three designs were tested: (1) Bag-design. The dialysis bag with an algal culture is suspended in the 2I beaker containing culture medium. Both media are simultaneously stirred with magnetic bars on a stirrer. The unit is used for studying growth pattern and protein content of the culture under different temperatures and light intensities in short-term experiments. (2) Flat membrane-design. Two cylinder-like perspex chambers containing up to 1l medium are separated by the membrane stretched between them. The volume of each chamber may be regulated by inserting perspex discs. The unit serves to test the suitability of various semipermeable membranes and to study the effect of different surface and volume ratios. (3) Tube-design. A closed system of horizontal dialysis bags is submerged in a 12I perspex bath. The inner algal culture is circulated by the pumping and the outer medium is stirred. The unit may be operated either as batch or as a continuous culture. Changeable adapters make it possible to work with bags of different diameters. A pilot plant size of this unit is suited for longer experiments and for various analytical studies. The above growth units constitute an intermediate analytical tool to investigate algal growth in dialysis cultures. The unusually high concentration of algal biomass obtainable with this technique, and the possibility to avoid direct contact with suspended solids, bacteria, and viruses of the medium, make dialysis culturing particularly promising for mass production of algal food from wastewater.
