Abstract
    The gut contents of the intertidal Prosobranchs Littorina saxatilis (Olivi) and L. nigrolineata (Gray) were compared with the surrounding algal flora from an intertidal rocky shore at Roscoff (North-West Brittany). The resulting trophic spectra show in both species a mainly microphagous habit, while revealing a potential trend towards euryphagy. An 'omnivorous' hypothesis, previously proposed for L. saxatilis alone, from its typical country (i.e. the Venice lagoon, where the exclusively extramediterranean species L. nigrolineata is not found) may so be confirmed. Interspecific differences between the two littorinids are likely related to the different places they occupy on the shore. Though both live mainly in the mid-upper part of the intertidal zone, L. nigrolineata seems typically to prefer a somewhat lower level and relatively sheltered micro-habitats. Such a bionomic difference may be taken into account, together with a number of biological differences of the greatest importance, to split the ecological niches of these sibling species on North-Eastern Atlantic shores.
