Abstract
The deep ocean is the largest and least explored biological region on Earth. Wide-ranging estimates of the total number of species in the deep sea (500 000 to 10 000 000) reflect under-sampling and a limited knowledge of how habitat heterogeneity and environmental stability influence biodiversity in this environment. Nevertheless, I argue that current scientific understanding of deep-sea biodiversity is advanced enough to inform and guide the development of conservation strategies.
