Abstract
From December 1976 to December 1978, vertical and horizontal distributions of salinity and density were studied in two brackish lakes located in the north-west Mediterranean Sea, in order to compare it with neighborhood seawaters and freshwaters. The spatia-temporal variations of salinity and density are very closely similar. The seasonal variations are different from year to year, because the water masses of these lakes were disturbed by freshwaters at different times of the year. Annual average values of salinity in Etang de Berre are 5- 6o/oo (meiomesohaline), and average value of Carry-le-Roue! is 37 .605o/oo, representing typical Mediterranean sea water. The average value of sigma-t in brackish waters is about 2. 76 and that of marine waters is 27.815. On the other hand, evolutions of salinity in Etang de Berre were summarized in table from 1912 to 1978. This represented an ecological variation of these lakes. T-S diagrams have been studied in order to distinguish different water masses in spatia-temporal variations.
