Abstract
The histological indication of protogyny are a rare occurrence among the three species of Symphodus (labridae) studied: Symphodus (Crenilabrus) ocellatus, S. (C.) cinereus and S. (C.) mediterraneus. Amongst 299 studied fish, only one S. (C.) mediterraneus of 96 mm of standard length had ovocytes in the seminifery tubes of its testicles. Among Dentex macrophtalmus (Sparidae), we found no indication of hermaphrodism. Lipidic cell islands were found in the testicles of these four species, constantly among the vocytes in the seminifere tubes of its testicles, among Dentex macrophtalmus, and during the sexual rest, among certain Symphodus. From the sexual maturity of the latter, we find cells with a seemingly morphologic character, but without lipids, in small accumulation between the seminifery tubes. Identical elements can be found in the ovary of the four species. The significance of these cells is discussed, and their nature of interstitial cells (of Leydig) is proposed, awaiting the follow up of the work.
