Abstract
Geographic information system (GIS) are now ubiquitous. They have spread far beyond the government, utility, and natural resource management organizations where they found their first homes. Because of this technological expansion, GIS users need a comprehensive dictionary of GIS language. Due to interdisciplinary nature, GIS has borrowed terms from related fields. In many cases, the meanings of these words have evolved and shifted over time. With more than 1,800 terms, A to Z gIS: an illustrated dictionary of geographic information systems was designed to be a comprehensive technical dictionary for GIS students and professionals alike. Our goal for this dictionary was to create definitions that are technically accurate yet not intimidating to the GIS novice.A to Z GIS is a dictionary of general GIS terminology, not software-specific terminology. Those who would like access to ESRI-software-specific definitions can find them oin the GIS Dictionary at support.esri.com/gisdictionary.
