Abstract
    Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is among the most cultured Penaeid shrimp, with global aquaculture production of around 5.8 million tons in the year 2020. The advancements in the area of genetics and genomics are crucial for genetic improvement of farmed whiteleg shrimp. The molecular information enables researchers to understand the structural, functional, and comparative/evolutionary characteristics of the species. This chapter reviews the status on genetics and genomics of whiteleg shrimp, focusing on the on cytogenetics, chromosomal manipulations, sex differentiation and determination, diversity assessment using various molecular markers (e.g., allozymes, SSRs, SNPs, and mitochondrial), quantitative genetic studies (including inbreeding), and structural and functional genomics (including gene editing) with the aim to enhance aquaculture production and improve understanding of their ecology, physiology, and evolution. We present our views on the future direction of whiteleg shrimp genomics, including the role of advanced technologies in elucidating genetic features that underpin functional variabilities. Furthermore, the upcoming research on the identification of candidate genes, development of functional markers and their integration in the breeding program will ensure improvement in the production and the fitness traits of vanname
