Abstract
This publication aims to acquaint those concerned by marine environmental studies, especially involving the coastal environment and water quality monitoring, with hydrological descriptors. It covers the most usual environmental descriptors, which fall into three main categories: physico-chemical (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity), particulate matter (total suspended matter, organic P, N and C, chlorophyll pigments) and nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate and silicate). Several chapters provide an overview setting analyses in their environmental context. Although the methods contained in this document are not standardized, they are those used by a very large community of marine environment analysts. They can be applied over the entire range of salinity encountered in open sea, coastal and estuarine (including fresh water) environments.
