From 17 to 20 November 2026, the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity 2026 will bring the global marine biodiversity community together in the historic city of Bruges, Belgium. Join the scientific conference as a participant or abstract presenter. On 18 November, the general public is also invited to a special screening of the deep-sea documentary How Deep is Your Love.
The 7th World Conference on Marine Biodiversity (WCMB 2026) is a leading international conference dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity. The event will take place at the Concert Hall Bruges from 17 to 20 November 2026 and is organised by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ). Under the motto The marine biodiversity insights we need, for the ocean we want, the conference aims to foster collaboration across disciplines, sectors and borders.
WCMB 2026 offers a truly multidisciplinary platform for scientists, policymakers, conservation practitioners, industry representatives, students and citizen scientists to share and discuss recent research results, innovative approaches and policy scenarios related to marine biodiversity. The conference is officially recognised as part of the UN Ocean Decade, contributing to global efforts to protect and restore ocean health.
At the core of WCMB 2026 are seven thematic tracks, encompassing around forty sessions that address a wide range of pressing issues in marine biodiversity research and practice. Topics include evaluating progress and challenges related to the UN Ocean Decade goals, understanding biodiversity baselines and trends, and harnessing digital (bio)informatics and e-oceans to close critical knowledge gaps. Other themes focus on opportunities and bottlenecks in taxonomic research, the role of science in policymaking, and the engagement of communities and citizen science. Finally, several sessions centre on assessing the current state of marine biodiversity, with a strong emphasis on monitoring programmes, technological innovation and collaboration across networks.
In short, WCMB 2026 offers relevant themes for every researcher and professional wishing to contribute to the marine biodiversity dialogue — from fundamental science to applied research and policy impact. Whether you want to contribute to the scientific programme or take part in inspiring sessions and networking opportunities, WCMB 2026 is a unique opportunity to engage with the future of the world’s oceans. Register now and be part of the marine biodiversity debate!
