Beschrijving

On December 17, 2025, took place the 3th pilot release of 43 juvenile European sturgeons (Acipenser sturio) into the lower Ebre river (SW Catalonia). They carry an external spaghetti tag, a PIT tag and an ultrasound transmitter. The objective of this project is to find out if the fish adapt well and how they behave in the Ebro River, its delta and the sea.
The first release of 44 young European sturgeons took place on December 21, 2023 as part of the “LIFE MIGRATOEBRE” project. The second release of 50 fish, a later action of the Life MigratoEbre project, by mutual agreement between its former partners plus MITERD, took place on December 11, 2024.
This project is coordinated by the Center for the Study of Mediterranean Rivers (CERM) of the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) in collaboration with the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition of the Government of Catalonia, the Institute for the Development of the Ebre Regions (IDECE), the Aquaculture Center of the Institute for Research and Food Technology (IRTA) of La Ràpita and the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of the Government of Spain. The French Government is also participating through the Direction Régionale de l'Environnement, de l'Aménagement et du Logement of the New Aquitaine region, in collaboration with the INRAE - Unité Ecosystèmes Aquatiques et Changements Globaux (EABX) and the association MIGADO (Migrateurs Garonne Dordogne Charente Seudre).

Geografische spreiding
Spanish part of the Mediterranean Sea - Western Basin [Marine Regions]

Spreiding in de tijd
21 December 2025 - 15 Juli 2026

Taxonomic coverage
Acipenser sturio Linnaeus, 1758 [WoRMS]

Parameters
Fish detections Methode
Fish detections: Acoustic telemetry
Fish detections: PIT telemetrie
Fish detections: Conventional tags
Conventional tags are essentially fish identification tags. These take many forms and may consist of a long piece of plastic tubing, a disc, or small coded wire. Generally they contain a unique number, identifying the individual fish as well as contact information from the sponsoring organization. They can be secured with a plastic or stainless steel dart or may be inserted under the skin entirely
