The MRC (Marine Robotics Centre) manages a set of autonomous moorings that can be equipped with a range of sensors for oceanographic observations (e.g. CTD, ADCP, etc.). Furthermore, the centre works with innovative sonar-based sensors to provide high-resolution observations of the seabed surrounding the mooring over a longer period in real time.
The moorings are usually deployed on the seabed as stand-alone systems but can also be connected with a cable to land in fjord systems. The MRC is currently stepping up its capacity to provide the data collected by these moorings in (near-) real-time.
Additionally, the MRC has standing moorings on land, equipped with wind and sun-powered multi-purpose mobile observatories (ARC-MO), enabling near real-time measurements of air, ice, land, rivers, and marine parameters in remote off-grid areas.
Two test units were constructed and placed in Northeast Greenland, where data from cabled and wireless instruments deployed in the environment since late summer 2021 was collected. These units can communicate locally via Wi-Fi and transmit near-real-time data globally over satellite.
