Abstract
In this chapter the author reviews what we know, assume, and hypothesize about the first three levels of spacing in nonbreeding shorebirds. He concentrates on evidence from shorebirds because it is useful to ask within a single, well-studied taxonomic group, where we stand in linking data and theory. His approach is to dissect each behavioral axis and its explanatory hypothesis into their basic components and underlying logic. The goal is to lay bare what can and cannot be shown empirically about shorebird winter spacing behavior and its ecological control.
