If we wait 10-15 years for the results of a maybe adequate trend-analysis and for scientific evidence of harmful effects, there is a clear risk that some effects (have) become irreversible. Assessment of the quality status of the North Sea is a necessity. The policy of the Belgian authorities for assessing the acceptability of wastes for dumping, has always been on the basis of ecotoxicological testing. For the purpose of assessment, agreement on the methods to assess is necessary. Measures have to be taken at international level. In the development of internationally agreed principles for ecotoxicological testing, the international conventions have their role to play in addition to the valuable work which is done in national laboratories. |
