Abstract
    Coho salmon fry were reared from the time of first feeding for 8 months in the laboratory. Seventeen treatment groups were arranged in a 3-factor composite factorial design to investigate the effect of freshwater temperature, seawater temperature, and date of transfer to seawater on the ability of zero-age coho smolts reared under delayed photoperiod to adapt and grow in seawater. All 3 factors influenced seawater growth. Relative growth rate in seawater was best for smolts transferred during the latter half of June and the first half of July. It is concluded that the minimum freshwater rearing temperature for production of zero-age coho smolts is 8°C. For transfers to 14°C seawater, the optimum freshwater rearing temperature was approximately 11°C and the optimum transfer date, the beginning of July.
