Abstract
Types of boundaries and their structure between water masses in the Black Sea, Pacific and Indian Oceans are described. The type of boundary between water masses influences the type of plankton distribution, both spatially and temporally. The stability and duration of the boundary and patchiness of the plankton affects the functioning of boundary ecosystems is clearly connected with both the physical environment and the feeding characteristics of the plankton. Estimates of production levels and carbon accumulation in planktonic organisms is given.
