Abstract
Unberthing operation of a twin screw ferry deserves special attentions in some cases. Crabbing ability of ships is important for Unberthing operation. Crabbing is induced by the use of a combination of main propellers, rudders and side thrusters. The speed of the ship is extremely low or even zero during unberthing. The operation of twin propellers and rudders is very peculiar, and the manoeuvring motion would be subjected to the effects of restricted water since it moves near the quay and/or in shallow water. The fluid dynamics during the unberthing is a very complicated phenomenon and requires a vast number of experiments with various environmental and operational parameters. In this study, a series of experiments are performed to find out how the hydrodynamic forces vary according to variation in water depth or the distance between the ship and the quay.
