| Abstract |
The image of nineteenth-century migration as a one-off rural-urban population transfer during Europe's transition from preindustrial to industrial society has underwent significant revisions in recent years. Drawing on recent scholarship to develop an innovative conceptual framework, this article takes the Belgian city of Antwerp as a case-study and uses nominal data on c. 20 000 newcomers between 1760 and 1860 to investigate the dynamics of migration change in a long-term perspective. In this period the city underwent a profound transformation from a middle-sized regional textile centre to a booming international port town of more than 120 000 inhabitants, while its rural hinterland was confronted with processes of impoverishment. This profound change makes the city an ideal case from which to track the dynamics of migration and the speeds of change among different groups of newcomers. |
