Abstract
The free-falling instrument TurboMAP is a newly developed profiler that combines high-resolution bio-optical sensors with standard sensors for measuring turbulence parameters. Several laboratory test and field trials were performed to evaluate the instrument's performance. Flow tank data, measured concurrently with TurboMAP and an acoustic Doppler velocimeter, showed that TurboMAP accurately measures turbulent velocity fluctuations. Turbulence spectra computed from the field data agree with theoretical spectra in both shape and magnitude. Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates as low as 5 x 10-10 m²s-3 can be resolved. The bio-optical sensors measure in vivo fluorescence and turbidity. The response and spatial resolution of the bio-optical sensors were established in a series of laboratory experiments, which showed that the sensors resolve variations of fluorescence and turbidity on centimeter-scales. Data from several field trials corroborate these results.
