Abstract
How can we leverage global access to the internet to advance understanding of some of the least accessible environments on Earth? The deep ocean plays a critical role in regulating our planet’s climate, carbon, and marine and terrestrial ecosystems. However, global deep ocean datasets have historically been challenging to access, analyze, and interpret. As such, deep ocean issues have not been given broad consideration in many global policy and management contexts, and data access presents a barrier to deep ocean research in many countries. This article presents a collection of interactive open-access mapping interfaces, available for use on desktop and mobile devices, for sharing global deep ocean metrics with stakeholders and audiences that may otherwise not have access to appropriate global geospatial data and technology. We discuss the development and impacts of these interfaces in the context of three recent use cases and share a web link to each open-access tool.
