Abstract
We examined the sea pen specimen Pteroeides esperi (Herklots,1858) collected from Point Calimere landing center, Palk Bay, south east coast of India. The present study analysed the systematic characteristics and growth parameters such as length frequency distribution, length– weight relationship (LWR) and relative condition factor (Kn). A total 65 of P. esperi were collected, with the body length and weight between 6.4 and 11.6 cm (9.15 ± 0.93) and 13 to 46 g (27.91 ± 8.57), respectively. This study found that P. esperi has a negative allometric growth pattern with the growth co efficient (b) value of 2.2664. The estimated LWR allometric equation was W = 0.1778L2.2664. The estimated co-efficient of determination (r2) and relative condition factor (Kn) value were 0.527 and 1.02, respectively. There is no earlier study on the LWR of sea pens in Indian coasts. This current study establishes baseline data on the LWR for sea pen resources, which helps to future research and conservation management activities.
