| Abstract |
One new species of bopyrid isopod is described from northeastern Brazil, parasitising the alpheid shrimps Alpheus estuariensis, A. formosus and Salmoneus carvachoi. Parabopyrella frevo sp. n. is characterised by a suboval body, short frontal lamina, eyes present, inner ridge of first oostegite with digitations, pereopods with cluster of scales on the carpi and meri, pleomeres on the shorter side of pleon with pointed margins and on the longer side with rectangular margins, and a semicircular pleotelson. In addition, we describe aspects of the relationship between the host and the parasites, which can significantly affect the life of the host. An identification key for species of Parabopyrella Markham 1985 that occur in Brazil and a distribution map of P. frevo sp. n. are also provided, along with a table comparing nine similar species of the genus Parabopyrella included in the morphological group ‘B’. |
