Abstract
This chapter introduces the reader to the concepts of radiation and radioactivity, and examines the factors that have contributed to their presence in the oceans of the world. We provide definitions of common terms, review how nuclear activities have contributed to radioactivity in the ocean, and examine how the characteristics of specific radionuclides dictate their movement through the environment. Case studies consider how the presence of radionuclides in the marine environment can be used to better understand the structure and function of the ocean; and how some human and nonhuman populations have been affected by radioactivity.
