Abstract
One of the most effective measure to cope with the erosion at the Belgian coast is the artificial nourishment of the active beach. Such an erosive trend can be detected also at the area of Knokke, so a combined beach and shoreface nourishment is planned for this area. It will consist of approx. 4 million m3 of sand to be deployed in the period 2019 – 2022 along of 6 km of coast. FHR was appointed by Coastal Division to monitor the evolution of this nourishment during and after construction. The main objectives of this study are related to a) efficiency of the nourishment; b) alongshore distribution of the sand and influence to adjacent areas; and c) to understand the dynamics of the Appelzak tidal gully. Along with the successive digital elevation models of the area and numerical modelling, a series of in situ measurements will contribute reaching the study objectives. Two type of measurements are foreseen: 1) hydrodynamics focussed on the marine currents along pre-established transects; 2) grain-size distribution along the entire area between Zeebrugge and the Dutch border. The results of this project will allow better insight into the evolution of the large beach nourishments at the Belgian coast with significant implication for the future coastal defence policy.
